Trident Layers Wild Strawberry + Tangy Citrus

This review is sponsored by our friends at Trident!

Texture: I'm deviating from the format here and doing texture first. This was an exciting New Gum for Katie and I. When I first saw it in Target, I picked up both of the available flavors.

When you open the piece, you'll notice that it;s about twice as thick as normal Trident gums. It's got three layers - a hot pink sticky substance sandwiched in between two gum-layers. The middle layer obviously isn't gum, but a sugarless "sugary" candy goo designed for a flavor punch. It actually is so gooey that it sticks to the wrapper a bit, leaving a pink line on the wrapper.

At first, it's a nice chew. A little firm at first but it quickly softens into a pleasant malleability. Unfortunately, it just as quickly degrades into an overly tacky wad that sticks to the teeth, and then loses cohesion and becomes way too soft.

Flavor: The middle "goo layer" provides a citrusy blast on first chew, and it fades into a nice strawberry-citrus medley that lasts a decent amout of time. Although it's not a huge complaint, the artificial sweetener taste is strong in this one.

Overall: Trident Layers Wild Strawberry + Wild Citrus was a bit of a disappointment. The sleek packaging and the stealthy launch of the new line (it's still not on the Trident website) was worth a lot more than the gum ended up being in the end. Overall, I think this is a gimmicky gum, worth a chew for novelty's sake but I definitely can't see this being anyone's favorite.
Rating: oo (two gumballs)

I'm a gum addict and just tried Trident's Layers in Green Apple - Pineapple and really like it but I became wary when I discovered they don't disclose all ingredients on the package... I think most Trident gum flavors last a lot longer than other sugarless gums with the exception of their Strawberry so maybe that's partly why this Layered Strawberry isn't so great. My faves are Minty Sweet Twist (lasts the longest) and Wild Blueberry Twist which are both hard to find in Austin, TX anyway.

I personally LOOOOOVE this gum, it's extremely flavorful and different. I love the packaging too! Both flavors rock, but then I've always been a Cadbury (maker of Trident, Dentyne, Stride, etc) fan! I think everyone should try it once!

Best gum I've had in a long time!!

I lvoe this gum! I discovered Trident Layers last week at Safeway. It has now been my favorite gum I carry both teh strawberry citrus and the apple pineapple one in my bag I am addicted to it! I gave my freinds some and they loved it so much they copied me :D
I really love this gum though. The one pineapple apple is much better than the strawberry in my opinion.

Let it be known that it is the belief of the creators of this blog, that the comments for Trident Layers are most, if not all, from Trident employees. The gum just is NOT that good.

And I removed the Anonymous comment above because it used inappropriate language for our family-friendly blog.

hi, my name is mynhi and i live in the inland valley, ca. I for once, have to totally disagree... although i haven't tried the citrus/strawberry flavor yet, the apple pineapple flavor was a burst of happiness in my mouth! i really don't understand why people think its so bad :( well, its truly just my opinion of course, but its me and my boyfriend's favorite. hopefully they dont discontinue this product... i'm going to stock up on it! :)

it would be better if they paid attention that there are a lot of Muslims and Jewish in america. stop putting something has pork in every single thing u make. give respect to other religions by not putting that in most of the candies and gums.

just the fact that i am looking at a BLOG about this GUM at 4:40 in the am should tell you there is something wrong with this gum...

Perhaps some comments were from Trident employees, however not everyone has the same sense of taste. Just because one person doesn't like it doesn't mean everyone else does. I am a gum person and I love Trident Layers, and I am not a Trident employee (am a pharmacist). I just happen to like it. I like fruity or cinnamon gum, don't care for the spearmint/peppermint type, so Layers is perfect for me. I am still upset at Wrigley for discontinuing Excel (Eclipse in the US) Extreme Fuse. They used to make Cherry Chill which I loved, but got rid of that as well.

A+ on presentation. Flipping the package open you're presented with two rows of neatly wrapped gum, shining like little silver ingots (even the wrapping is textured).

The gum itself is just okay. The problem with all gums having really strong flavors is that the drop-off is that much more obvious.

I had an alergic reaction to this gum and now I have a rash of red blotches around my mouth! It itches so bad!

This gum is AMAZING! I tryed it about a month ago and still buying it. I AM I GUM ADDICT. I CHEW GUM ALL THE TIME I WILL TOTALLY BUY THIS GUM FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. IN MY GRAVE I WILL STILL BE BLOWING THE TRIDENT LAYERS GUM!
Pros: Lasts a long time, wild and strong flavor, etc....

I tried this gum when my friend let me have a piece. I hated it right down to the gooey center. It tasted so fruity that it didn't taste like a fruit at all. I kinda felt like they just shoveled artificial flavoring and sugar into the center and left the 2 outer pieces as a flavorless shell.

AGreenhill said...

haha.. I like the comment from the blog writers saying that people who like this gum are actually Trident employees.. uh... really? You think employees care enough to lie on the internet in their off-hours? Or wait - you think Trident actually pays people to lie and spam the internet??

Anyway - personally I like the apple/pineapple one.. I found this blog while trying to find information on the ingredients. Is it even legal to not post ingredients on gum packaging??

Shannon said...

Actually, DAG, companies do hire people all the time to monitor internet activity. As far as the ingredients, we've gotten a few emails regarding the ingredients of this particular gum. Apparently it contains a pork product, so it's not acceptable in certain religions. We think Trident is at fault for not disclosing this openly! Thanks for the comment!

I got the Strawberry & Tangy Citrus and was very disappointed. Quite flavorless. :( I'll try the other flavors but am not getting my hopes up.

I really think this gum is great! It does have a long lasting flavor. I'm chewing apple pinapple right now, I have had it for about 30 mins now, it still ahs the flavor!:) I personally think its good, it even lets me know wen I need to spit it out, that happens wen it gets nice and soft!I lovee Trident Layers!

I just bought the gum, and was SORELY disappointed. It tasted good at first....then-it actually tasted like alam. NAS-T. Totally HATE it. Want my money back.

I really like this gum. :D It's interesting and tasty. Accusing the people who like the gum of being employees just because you don't like it? Really? That's kind of sad...

yuck.....don't like it.

what is the pork ingredient in the gum that people are referring to? I see partially hydrogenated coconut oil (trans fat) which bothers me but my nutritionist says it's probably a miniscule amount. I love the pineapple apple the best but I would like some answers on the ingredients.

Hi Nancy - We sure would like more information on the ingredients, too! They're very hard to find! Multiple sources say that Trident Layers (and certain other forms of Trident, incidentally) contains a pork-derived gelatin ingredient, which makes it NOT OKAY for certain religions and vegetarians. Hope that helps! Thanks for reading gumalert!

I like it. Not my favorite, not the worst I've had. I might go with 3 bubbles instead of 2. My wife got it on clearance, so I can't complain.

Just a friendly reminder from our FAQ page:

I feel very strongly about a new gum or gum commercial I saw on TV, and I would like to post about it in your comments section using bad words and racial slurs. Is that okay?

While we love to hear your opinion about gum, our reviews, and gum culture as a whole, we want gum fans of all ages to be able to enjoy Gum Alert, so we ask that you keep your language in the comments section at a PG level. If we think something is offensive, we're going to remove your comment.

The taste is fair... but the packaging is poor (split in two, paper sticks on the gum) and the ingredients are not on it.

I bought it because my favourite was not available (Wrigley's 5) and I will "stick" :o) with my 5 !

I am super picky with gum and I think this is literally the BEST gum out there. Since it came out I haven't bought ANY! other type of gum because nothing comes close to this!!!!! 100% satisfaction, my favorite gum!!!!

I bought the pineapple trident layers at my local supermarket today. I'm chewing my first piece. For the price I paid (* 1.99 *) here in Hawaii, it's worth it. I've been reading the comments here, apparently some have been experiencing allergic reactions to the gum? I got a bump on my tongue actually while chewing this gum and found it to be quite an odd coincidence. Regardless, i'll probably keep on chewin as it is delicious. I'm surprised the flavor has lasted this long, I'm used to the tropical version of trident losing it's flavor fairly quickly. Anyhow, just want to say I'm a normal teenager and not a Trident / nor affiliated employee - I hope others give this gum a try, as it is a really cool experience. Gum with a fruit layer - awesome?

Anonymous said...

strawberry layers SUCKS. It tastes gross after 5 minutes of chewing. What a waste of $2.00...

Anonymous said...

can't wait till i buy the gum, my friend gave me a sample!

Anonymous said...

Seriously. this is the most addicting gum I have every experienced. They have to be putting something in this. AND they don't fully disclose their ingredients.... hmmmmm... sketchy business.

i recently bought the minty-melon one at our local Walmart and i decided due to the commercial with the granny selling her house,to give it a shot.when i got home i shared this gum with my brother and the reaction was priceless.WE LOVED IT.now my brothers takes a pack to work because he loved it so much,as well as i did too.this is truly a gum worth buying.

Awesome flavor and taste. I've been wanting to give it a try for a while & finally got the chance. The wild strawberry & tangy citrus is a great combo. Love it!

I'm not a Trident employee, I'm a security guard, so with a job as boring as mine, chewing gum is one of the few pleasures I have during my shifts. This is one of my favorite gums, so don't disrespect those who like it. Everyone has different tastes.

Shannon said...

Heh - my "Trident Employees" comment was written long ago, before our blog took off and became somewhat popular. We couldn't believe that so many people would come here to comment on Trident Layers. I do still wonder, in all honesty, if some of them *were* from Trident employees. It's a fact that companies hire people to monitor their reputation on the web, so who knows! I guess it's certainly probably that plenty of people like this gum.

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately, it has pork...and I dont eat pork. But I did not taste it before I found out, so thank goodness for that because it seems like it tastes really good! :) Alhamdulillah!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME???!!!! THIS IS MY FAVORITE GUM EVER!!!! i cant believe without it!!!! its so juicy, yummy, citrusy, and i love ALL the trident layer flavors!!!

how can you NOT give this 5 gumballs??!!!

also, i wrote about how i love trident layers a few minutes earlier. im NOT a trident employee, i'm 14 and back from school right now in my room. and i believe most of the comments, if not all, are NOT trident employees. because no offense or anything, but why would trident layers, the big company, care about a little blog? sure your blog might be somewhat famous but they wont really care what you write, because they are earning tons of $$$$ anyway. why cant you just accept the fact that people enjoy and love trident layers? its really delicioous gum with lots of flavor and yummy. i AM a little suspicious of the many "Anonymous" comments, they might my trident employees, but who cares? even without their comments, everyone loves trident layers!! stop being so stubborn! thanks ;D

Hi there Katy, thanks for your comments. This entry is over two years old. Our blog has evolved over that time, and has become much more family-friendly as it has grown. We get thousands of comments, and we apparently missed that one offensive one. Our apologies.

The original entry, and the ensuing comments, were, as I said, from over two years ago, when Trident Layers was first coming out. It seemed odd that a gum that just came on the market was getting so much positive commentary here.

I still think this gum is crap. It just goes to show you that gum is a subjective thing.

And Trident actually does care about our blog, they've sent us free samples to review before, so obviously they like the publicity we give them.

Thanks again for your comments and happy chewing!

Shannon said...

And so you're aware, I have removed the offensive comment, as well as your comment quoting it. Thanks for pointing it out to us.

Margaret Dunlap said...

I am not a Trident employee and I doubt if the other people who said they liked it work for Trident either. Trident has too much market share to worry about whether your blog liked their gum or not. My daughter and I, her teacher and all her friends love the Trident Layers gum. YES, TASTE IS SUBJECTIVE. Duh. My favorite is the apple pineapple but the strawberry citrus is good too.

* I AM NOT A TRIDENT EMPLOYEE I'M A 13 YEAR OLD GIRL WHO LIKES GUM *
I had this gum when I was in 5th grade and personally didn't like it. The Cherry and Lime one is my FAVORITE gum right now! Personally I think this flavor of Layers is crap. Strawberry and Citrus I guess just don't belong in a gum together. Now to go eat some gum and finish listening to the radio.

Anonymous said...

Just tried the layer gum. Yuck. Spit it out after 2-3 minutes. Looked up the ingredients on the internet after a headache started. It has nutrasweet in it. Now I'll have a migraine for the next two days. :(
Very irresponsible to market an item without an ingredient list. :(
