Trident Original Flavor

Flavor: The flavor of Trident Original flavor is pretty bland. There's no burst, no explosion, just a subtle mint from start to finish. Trident Original doesn't mean to be flashy - there's no exclamation points on the label, no crunchy bits in the gum itself. Trident Original was the very first sugarless gum ever, first appearing in 1964, and it's stuck around so long because they haven't changed it. It's a pleasant mint, it freshens the breath. It works.

Texture: Trident, as Katie pointed out in her very first review, knows gum. It's hard to critique the texture of this gum. It's soft at first chew, and doesn't harden or soften. It's just great.

Overall: With the exception of a reformulation with xylitol (which obviously wasn't a bad thing,) Trident Original has been THE sugarless gum since 1964. While I don't personally know anyone who calls this gum their favorite, I have no doubt that there are hundreds, if not thousands of people who always have a pack of Trident Original in their purse or pocket. I bet my Grandma would if she didn't have dental work that makes Freedent her only choice. That being said, I just have no other option than to give this gum five gumballs. It's a nice chew, I'd absolutely chew it again, and it would just be disrespectful not to.
Rating: ooooo (five gumballs)

I have to disagree with you on the Trident Original flavor. The new formula is awful. Too minty that overpowers the original flavors. Trident Original has always been my favorite flavor but not anymore! I called the company and told them I didn't like it and to change it back! It's sad. I've enjoyed that flavor since I was a kids.

The reformulated "Original Flavor" has no business being called "Original". Whether you like it or not, the taste has virtually nothing to do with the flavor of its predecessor.

Personally,if I wanted a strong mint taste I would have been buying the minty flavors in the first place.

I absolutely DO NOT like the "new" version of Trident original. I hate the flavor and it does not stay soft and chewable for long. Will we able to continue to purchase the "original" flavor?

NEW original? Wow! I wonder if they changed it since I wrote this review originally. I'll have to do some research! Thanks for the comments!

I have just recently started chewing this gum because my mother in law put it in my stocking for Christmas, since then I have gotten terrible sores and blisters in my mouth, I can barely talk or eat and am seeing my dr today, but I was wondering if this flavor had any cinnamon in the recipe? I have googled it and had no luck... PS, yes, I have stopped chewing it!

ok so i am a little upset.

I was getting trident gum in the packages, you know, the foil paper that had sticks that also had a wax-paper cover. I would always buy it in the green sparement, and i bought it for years, because the taste lasted so long.

Then a couple of years ago some gum guys got together and said "hmm lets make chicklets bigger!" and the chicklet-type gums (with the hard shell in the plastic tinfoil sealed packaging started going all the rage, i tried one or two packs, but all those types of gum were the same.. flavor for a short while, then it would be bland gum with that used.

I didn't like the flavor cutting out after a short while, so i kept buying the trident in the tinfoil wrap with the wax paper covered sticks. neededless to say they got harder and harder to find in the "bulk" packages (3-4 packs of trident), and eventually i had to buy them in the store mega-pack style, with 16 or so.

Around that time these '5 times longer' gums came out that weren't chicklet-style, but juicy-fruit type gums, and i tried them, but to my surprise they lasted no-where near as long as the triedents that came in the foil wrap, with each gum individually wax papered. And i told everyone.

So fast forward to now, those tridents that were wrapped in the foil-paper and that were each individually wrapped, got replaced by the individually wrapped gums, in a cardboard wallet. So i had to buy them.

THE TASTE HAS BEEN LOWERED, AND THE FLAVOR LASTS ONLY A FRACTION WHAT IT USED TO LAST BEFORE

thanks for being cheap and so economically obsessed!

I have to agree with the anonymous about the cinnamon. I'm allergic to artificial cinnamon like red hots and big red.. to me it tastes like there is a bit of cinnamon in the recipe and my tongue is alittle sore after chewing the gum. I also googled it to find out but no luck.. maybe I will have to call trident and ask. To me it tastes good.. but I need to find out about the cinnamon before I end up having a bad reaction.. I'm also no longer chewing the gum until I find out for sure.

I love the strawberry trident layers, however they keep gum over the due date on shelves.. Ugh what I rip off!!

RE: Cinnamon Flavor

It's been a while since I've chewed Trident Original. A friend of mine gave me a piece the other day and it tasted like cinnamon gum. I thought that was weird because I remember the Original flavor being more like peppermint, which I always liked. I thought that maybe she had put some pieces from other packs into the one pack in her purse and that the one I got was from the cinnamon pack.

Today she offered me a piece from a brand new package of Original Trident. No doubt about it, it tastes like cinnamon gum. My friend thought so too. We even did a "scientific" experiment and had someone smell the gum wrapper and tell us what flavor of gum it was. The answer was cinnamon.

I too tried to Google to see if they had a flavor change. This is the only site that came up. I'm not a fan of cinnamon gum, so I will not be chewing this "Original" flavor anymore.

I fucking love original flavor Trident! Reformulated or not this shit is delicious.

Agreed, a screw up at Trident must be putting the cinnamon flavor in the original flavor packages. This is definitely cinnamon flavored.

Trident used to be my favorite gum -- now they changed the flavor! Didn't they learn the lesson from Coke? Now Now have to go with Orbit bubble gum punch out -- really miss the Original original Trident though. Hope they follow Coke's original mistake correction and go back to the way it was before. Now it just burns my mouth and tastes like every other strong mint gum out there.

I SO miss the Original Trident -- did they not learn from Coca-cola's reformulation mistake? Now it just burns my mouth and tastes like every other strong mint gum out there. So I switched to Orbit punch out bubble gum, but would go back to the "Original" Original Trident if they own up to their marketing mistake and bring an excellent product back.

i think the original flavor is now a blend of peppermint AND cinnamon....its my favorite now :))

I love Trident original now AND long ago! I have never tasted another gum like it. I can taste a hint of cinnamon that gives it a warm feeling. I also believe it to have cinnamon because of it's very slight pinkish tint. I do think they should say they put cinnamon ingredient on the packaging because it is a fairly common allergy. It will ALWAYS be my favorite gum.

I had some today and thought they labelled the packages wrong too. It is in a blue package so it seems like blue would indicate peppernint. However, there is a strong cinnamon flavor and a pink tinge to the gum.

I've gotten sores in my mouth from this gum too ever since they changed the formula.

Unknown said...

They have definitely changed the formula. I also like the spearmint because the flavor lasted forever! I would sometimes sleep all night with it and in the morning, it still tasted great. No longer! What happened to it??

Anonymous said...

I used to love the strawberry trident layers gum ... until now. Seems it is way too soft and the flavor does not last as long.

I have just chewed the Cinnamon flavored one with Xylitol and it burnt the back side of my cheeks inside my mouth and it looks like they're bruised up. There are also clear round looking puss-like appearance on both sides of my tounge. I've had the same case last week when I tried it the first time but I was doubtful and ignored it. But this morning I tried another piece and same thing happened. Beware of this gum, Xylitol might not be good for everybody.

Re: Cinnamon
It has been years since I had the "Original" flavor Trident and chose to try it again, not knowing about the flavor change. Well that was a big mistake.
I am anaphylaxis (severe throat closing) allergic to cinnamon and yes this happened to me. I called the 1-800 number and they would not verify the cinnamon issue due to propitiatory claims on the recipe, but did say that "if" it is in there it would be under the "Natural Flavoring" heading because it is not a common allergen.

Ok, my husband has this gum and I say it taste like cinnamon and he says it's mint. It does show mint on the packet. Very confusing. Not a fan!!!

We have chewed Trident for years. A few years ago the greedy corporation changed formulas so that the flavor will not last as long, forcing you to buy more. Greed has destroyed Trident gum.

Yesterday, I bought some Trident "Original" flavor because I remembered the flavor from years back and had a sudden craving. I was supremely disappointed to discover that the taste is now different.

People have been asking/speculating about the cinnamon. I am 100% positive this has cinnamon and peppermint as the flavors. How do I know? Because where I used to work, there were cinnamon and peppermint candies at the front desk. On a lark one day, I put one of each in my mouth at the same time. The flavor is 100% identical to "Original" Flavor Trident.

If you don't want to take my word for it, put a piece each of peppermint and cinnamon hard candies in your mouth so you can learn the flavor. Then compare it to Trident "Original" Flavor. There is no doubt it's the exact same flavor.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, but if this has cinnamon they need to state that otherwise. I am allergic to cinnamon and bought two packs of this. I thought it was all in my head when I smelled and tasted a hint of cinnamon because all my friends told me they couldn't taste it. My tongue gets blistered like it has been scalded every time I chew one of these gums. WTF Trident?

Trident original is, and always will be, my favorite gum. It is definitely minty, but it also has subtle nuances of licorice, cinnamon, and sometimes I sense a fruitiness - banana perhaps? I would love to find out what the recipe is. The flavor is reliable, but it also seems to change with my mood.

The new commercial that I just noticed in November 2015 where the dentists sit at the table... four dentists say yes and the fourth has a squirrel run up his pants and bite his manhood?? How is that relevant to chewing gum?? That's not really something I want my 3 year old picturing a squirrel potentially doing to him..
you should really think about revising it

But the gum... amazing. Keep up the great job! Lol

just had a piece of gum on my lunch break and bit down on something hard..at first I thought it was paper.but to my surprise it was an inch long piece of plastic!Thankfull that a small child didn't get that piece!

I've been chewing Trident Cinnamon Gum for over 40 years and there have absolutely been changes. When they went from saccarin to aspartame many years ago it didn't work for the cinnamon flavor and they took it out. I was sooo happy about that! I will not use aspartame, phenylalanine, Nutrasweet, or any other name they give it. The cinnamon gum is the only flavor that does not have it. Check the ingredients if you have doubts. I have adapted to all the different combinations of sweetners they have used since then including sucralose, manitol, sorbitol, xylitol, and others I can't recall. I even ordered cases of the small packs of cinnamon gum from an online store when the large packs of cinnamon went out of production a few years ago. I had them on the phone and they said not to worry, it was only temporary. It was, and all was well in my world again. :)
NOW there has been a recent change that has hit the store shelves in my area a few months into 2016. IT IS A HORRIBLE DISGUSTING CHANGE IN THE TASTE! It is no longer a true cinnamon flavored gum! It is horrible! The flavor and overall taste is so artificial that after a few minutes it is gone and the gum starts melting away! I have always chewed Trident Cinnamon gum after eating to clean my teeth and also to help alleviate a dry-mouth condition and the bad breath that goes along with it. It has always done a great job! I was able to tuck a piece of cinnamon gum away in my mouth and chew on it for several hours. It would lose most of the strong cinnamon flavor after a while, but the gum would still hold up, taste like gum, and serve it's purpose. It always made my mouth feel clean and my breath smell fresh! IT NEVER, EVER LEFT ANY KIND OF FILM OR AFTERTASTE IN MY MOUTH.....UNTIL NOW! I can barely keep a piece of this artificial formulation in my mouth for a few minutes! If I try to chew it for more than about 5-10 minutes the gum starts breaking down and I have to gather the pieces together in my mouth before I can spit it out. Then there is a disgusting artificial aftertaste and it feels like it leaves a film on my teeth and in my mouth. I want to chew a piece of Trident Cinnamon Gum to freshen things up! But, I can't because that is what caused the nastiest in the first place! It is so disheartening. A few years ago Trident went from being a Cadbury product to a company called Mondelez International. My guess is that it took them a while to lower the flavor and quality on everything and it just now hit the cinnamon gum. I don't think they will care what the consumers think. If we don't buy it, they will probably just discontinue it without a second thought. What is one flavor of gum to a giant international company? I will try my luck and call the number on the package to see what they have to say. I doubt they will admit to anything. But... You can't fool me Trident I've been with you since the 1970s! Now I don't know what I will do. :(

I have been chewing Trident Cinnamon forever. I can definitely tell a difference. I purchase the club packs at my local big box stores. This is the first pack that I have been able to tell a difference in the taste and I HATE IT. I will be taking the rest of this pack back to the store and will have to find something else to chew. Why would you change the taste of something that has been around for along time and was fine. Go figure.

I always like to chew gum! Trident gum has three layers with each layer having a flavor that is delicious and refreshes your taste buds. The best part is long lasting and is sugar-free! I chew it all the time in class to help me focus on work since I’m there sitting for an hour. This gum is an easy way to become popular and make friends. Every time I take out a fresh unopened pack in the classroom there is always that one person that asks me if they can get a piece of gum and making them my friend. Thanks to this gum it has even helped me see who my real friends are and those who are not. The real friends no matter what will not let other people know who gave them their gum, unlike the backstabbers who will point you out immediately betraying me and breaking that bond I once had with them. They come in many flavors Topical Twist, Spearmint, Cinnamon, and Strawberry Twist I would recommend the Topical Twist it has more flavors rather than one. Not many gum packs out there come in flavor layers and labeled to be sugar-free protecting your teeth. If you just ate garlic, eggs, or crackers having no time to brush or floss this gum helps to refresh stinky breath. The gum isn’t hard like another type that feels you are chewing rocks, but the only down part is that the pieces of gum are too tiny for big bubbles if you are a bubbler blower. Many dentists recommend this gum to their patients because it protects and cleans your teeth for a good price too! I would recommend getting the fruit variety
pack to see which pack you love best it comes with eight packs of Topical Twist, four packs of Watermelon Twist, and four packs of Island Berry Lime. Getting the sixteen pack will have you set with two hundred and eighty-eight total pieces lasting you for weeks. It is the best-selling gum out there that will have you addicted for more each time. You won’t go back to any other gum or see any other gum the same after trying trident’s flavors. There is also the trident splash with liquid flavor juice inside the gum after the first bite and lasts longer than the trident layers. It will have you chewing one after another every time your flavor runs out possibility of finishing a whole box within two days. If you are a gum fan I recommend you trident layers and splash for that delicious flavor tastes and not only if you have stinky breath but to protect your teeth as well!

Not a fan of the change at all. Bring back the original "original" flavor please, or I'll be switching to something else. NOT an improvement at all.

Anonymous : Bought a 3 pack of the cinnamon that tasted nothing like it. They messed up the flavors or put them in the wrong package.

The new Trident Original Gum flavor change is horrendous! It burned my mouth so much that I just spit it out! I will never by another Trident product or anything from this company. The outside packaging wasn't even noted of the change inside. They need to bring back the real original that I've be chewing for many years!

Anonymous said...

How can you call it original when you've changed it. It's awful. If I wanted minty (burning) I would have looked for something different. I won't buy this again and this had been my gum for years.

Anonymous said...

I'll keep adding to the discussion. I'm also in the camp of not liking the "new" flavor. I was wondering when it actually happened. Most people I mention this to don't know what I'm talking about, but that little cinnamon bite was what made this gum special. Now it just tastes like any other bland mint gum. Despite the aforementioned, I still chew it daily.

Anonymous said...

Trident (all flavors) are nothing like they used to be. Flavor, especially Original tastes like an antiseptic, I won't buy it. I now get Spearmint, but the gum just isn't the same beyond flavor. Guessing it changed with the packaging. The pieces are longer and thinner and harden when they never used to and lose flavor quickly.

Anonymous said...

I compared Original to an antiseptic, someone previously said it burned their mouth. EXACTLY! Thought it had been tainted. Plus it was hard. I bought a different flavor, thought maybe it was super old. Hard to chew and lost flavor quickly.
